The Bank of Maracaibo was the first bank in Venezuela, founded in the city of Maracaibo, Zulia State, on May 11, 1882. It held its first general shareholders' meeting on July 20 of the same year and opened its doors to the public during the month of January 1883.
Its Board of Directors was made up of Messrs. Ramón March, Ángel Urdaneta and AF Vargas.
With a capital of Bs. 160,000, it laid the foundations to be a centennial bank. It enjoyed a great reputation inside and outside of Venezuela and was a banknote issuer in denominations of 20, 40, 50, 100, 200, 400 and 500.
